A few years ago we had been to Ahmedabad in Gujarat. We went to see this Stepwell called ADALAJ KI VAV. It is in a small village called Adalaj. This well was built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai, wife of the Vaghela chief, Veersingh, it was not just a cultural and utilitarian space, but also a spiritual refuge. It is believed that villagers would come everyday in the morning to fill water, offer prayers to the deities carved into the walls and interact with each other in the cool shade of the vav.
There are beautiful carvings on the walls. One such carving looks beautiful in close up and when we see it from a distance it looks so different and more beautiful.
