We have a dwarf variety of the areca nut tree in our garden. The fronds of the tree are very closely held together. They make a very good nesting place for birds.
A few years ago, a bulbul couple built a nest there. It seemed very safe.
One morning I heard a lot of noise from outside. It was the sound of birds screeching. To my horror I saw a crow pheasant putting its head between the fronds.
The little bulbul birds were pecking at it repeatedly. They wanted the bigger bird to move away, they wanted their eggs to be safe. They put up a good fight but in vain. The crow pheasant made a good meal of those little eggs. Defeated, the bulbuls flew away. Never again did the birds build their nest in what seemed to be a safe place.
