The word sandwich reminds me of the phrase ‘sandwich generation’ used by my friend. It seems many of my generation feel that we are the sandwich generation. Sandwiched between the older generation and the younger generation. During our younger days many had to give up their interests and their careers to look after the family. Now older but still caught in the same situation. Their children are married and when they have children they expect their mothers to sit at home and look after their grandchildren. Again this means a sacrifice of their interests which they have been able to experience only after their children have grown up. This need not be so if the financial situation of the family is good otherwise someone has to sacrifice and that is left to the sandwich generation. All this sounds cynical but it happens to be true.
