Letter from Germany -2 (Slice of Life )

slice-of-life_individual
( I am in Germany in my daughter’s place. Her daughter was born this month on the 10th. I write mails to my mother ( Amma) and my father’s elder brother’s wife, my Doddamma ( elder mother ). I also send photos. My Doddamma is 86 and is mostly in her room and her home. My cousin’s wife wrote to me that my Doddamma was very to read and see the photos of my grandchildren which I send through WhatsApp. She says she can now imagine what they are doing. My mother too enjoys them. WhatsApp is such a blessing in many ways. It helps us to stay connected with our near ones, if we want to 😊.)
Walldorf

                                                        28-11-17

Dear Doddamma and Amma,

We are all fine here. Kavya has almost completed three weeks. It seems just the other day when Gayatri went to the hospital for the delivery. Kavya sleeps and cries only when she is hungry. At night she wakes three or four times, feeds and goes back to sleep. Touchwood 😊

Here everyday the weather keeps changing. Some days it rains every day and other days it is sunny and bright. The 22nd was bright and sunny. Vinay said he would take me to Heidelberg to see the older part of the city. Heidelberg is about half an hour’s drive from Walldorf. The University of Heidelberg is the oldest in Europe, it was founded in 1386. There is a library also
founded in 1421. It is the oldest existing public library in Europe. Vinay picked Advaith from his kindergarten, I was ready at home and we went to Heidelberg. We went to the old town to walk on the Hauptstrasse. This is the main road and it is a cobbled road through the old town. Vehicles are not allowed.

There are shops and eating places on both sides. There were so many people walking along. In Walldorf we hardly see any people. There are students and tourists.

IMG_20171122_202021

Vinay bought ice-creams for us, he and Advaith took in a cup and I had a cone ice-cream. We walked along eating.

On the way we saw a young man blowing huge soap bubbles. They looked very colourful, Advaith was running after them.

We walked along till we came to the bridge across the river Rhein-Neckar. It was a little before sunset and the river looked a beautiful golden.

IMG_20171122_203347
There was a barge coming along and Advaith enjoyed looking at it passing under the bridge and going along.

We stayed there for some time, by 4.30 the sun set and we went back to the parking place. The cars are parked at different levels, Advaith wanted the car to be parked really underground. While going back we have to take a ticket and when we are leaving the parking area Vinay inserted it in a machine and the barrier opened for us to go out.

Then we started back and reached home by 5.30. There was a lot of traffic, it was dark when we reached home.

Gayatri and Kavya were waiting for us. It was a good outing.

The Daily Post Photo Challenge : Transformation

Changes keep happening, in living beings or in non-living things. Some changes are not so noticeable but many a time the transformation is unbelievable. Caterpillars become butterflies, buds become flowers, the young become old, the raw become ripe. They are the same but so very different.

In our place we get very small chillies which we call ‘ Gaandhaari menasu’ in my language. They are small and very spicy. The raw ones are a beautiful green and are transformed into a beautiful red when they become ripe.

Letters from Germany – 1 (Slice of Life)

slice-of-life_individual

I have come to Germany, to my daughter’s home. Her daughter, Kavya was born on the 10th. Before leaving I told my mother and my father’s elder brother’s wife that I would write emails to them. My  previous post was my first letter to them. The following are four letters.
( Amma is mother and Doddamma is elder mother.

Dear Doddamma and amma,
Today morning I went with Vinay to drop Advaith in his school. It is not very far. The weather is cloudy and drizzling so we went in car.

After returning home I went with Vinay to Heidelberg where they are members of a very good library. Here there are only English books and DVDs for adults and children. There are books in shelves from the floor to the ceiling. We can bring about 8 books for children and four for adults and keep them for a month.

Heidelberg is less than half hour from Walldorf. It was almost two thirty when we reached Walldorf and picked Advaith from school and returned home.

9th November,
Today is At Martin’s day and is celebrated here by children and adults.
Lanterns are made in the school by the children with the help of teachers. They are made about two months earlier. Children choose what they want. Advaith wanted to make rocket shape.
Every year this is a fund raising event in Advaith’s school. Mothers prepare cakes and it is bought by those who come. The money collected is sent to the cancer ward in Heidelberg.
There is a bonfire in the school ground, parents and children stand around the bonfire and sing songs. It was nice to see this.

12th November
We came to the hospital in Heidelberg on the 10th morning at 9 o’ clock. During an earlier check up the doctor and her team talked with Gayatri and Vinay and said a cesarean was advisable.
After a series of check ups, Gayatri was taken to the operation theatre. Vinay was with her. I was waiting in the waiting room and reading a book which I had got from the library in Heidelberg.
The doctor, a very nice lady, talked to me while I was waiting and then after the delivery she came and wished me and told me there were no complications. Then Gayatri and the baby were brought to the post-operation ward. After two hours we came to the room. It is nice.
Vinay is looking after Advaith, they are coming after breakfast. We will go home tomorrow or maybe day after.  The weather is very cold here but inside there are heaters.
Kavya is fine. She sleeps a lot during the day. At night every two hours she gets up for her feed and then sleeps.
Gayatri is recovering but there is still pain. The doctor said it will take about ten days to heal properly.
It is now 6.10, both Gayatri and Kavya are sleeping.

14-11-17
We left the hospital yesterday morning at 11o’clock. Early in the morning Gayatri’s doctor had come on her rounds. Later a physiotherapist came to teach Gayatri some exercises. She had come the previous day too. We asked her permission and recorded Gayatri doing the exercises. Here the doctor has said that she can eat anything and if she feels something does not suit the baby she should not eat it. A Hebbame (midwife) comes to the house after the baby is born to check the baby’s health and also to hear our doubts and questions. They have to be contacted during pregnancy. As I am writing this  Gayatri’s hebamme is checking Gayatri and Kavya. Advaith was very happy to see his little sister at home. He wants her on his lap and likes to touch her hair. It is nice to see this.

I will write again after a few days.
With love,
Lakshmi

The Daily Prompt : Mushroom

Books have always been a part of my life. Long back, Enid Blytons were a fun and exciting moments of the days. Later on, I used to read aloud her books to my children.

Whenever I see mushrooms I remember her books like The Faraway Trees and so many others where elves and goblins and other fairy beings meet. They sat on mushrooms and talked to each other. Those were long ago days when we believed that anything and everything was possible.

Those days will not come back but those memories will always be a part of life.
