Letter from Home-1 (Slice of Life)

[ In October last year I started writing letters to my Doddamma, my father’s elder brother’s wife. In November, I went to my daughter’s place in Germany, she was expecting her second child. I wrote mails to my Doddamma and my mother (Amma) every week. I sent the mail to my sister-in-law, my mother lives with my elder brother and to my cousin’s wife. My Doddamma lives with her son. After returning home I thought I would post letters then decided to continue sending mails. It will reach them sooner and I can also attach photos. My Doddamma is 86 and is not able to go out. My Amma and Doddamma enjoy the mails and the photos, specially of their great grandchildren. The internet has really changed our lives, it helps us to keep some contact with our friends and relatives, if we want to.]

Dear Doddamma and Amma,
I returned home on the 19th morning. Aravinda and Kuvara (my husband) had come to the airport. I reached at 7.30 and after the formalities and getting my luggage, it was almost 8.15 when I came out. It was good to be back. We reached home at 9.45.
My flight, Eithad Airways was from Frankfurt to Abu Dhabi to Mangalore. We left home in Walldorf at 6.30 in the morning. Advaith too came with us. Frankfurt is 100 kms away. It was raining and there was a lot of traffic too but we were at the airport at 7.45. Vinay (our son-in-law) and Advaith came with me till I had to go in for security check in. We are allowed 7kgs as hand luggage. But I had a little more. So, I removed a sweater, shawls and gave it to Vinay. Anyway I will not be needing them in the near future.
There was no problem with the security check in and I went to the lounge in front of Gate number 23. Gayatri had given me some sandwiches. There is Wi Fi connection and I talked to Gayatri (our daughter) and also took my photo. With mobile cameras taking our own photos (selfies) has become so common and natural. It used to look very funny in the beginning but it is fun also.

My flight was to leave at 10.45, we started going into the plane at 9.45. It was almost 11 by the time the plane took off.
It is a very different experience as we fly through the clouds. For a few moments we are enveloped in thick white clouds. Mine was the window seat and I enjoyed looking out. When we are above the clouds it is as if we are in a different world. The blue sky and the white clouds look as if they have been cut in the middle.

In the distance I could see a plane moving in the same direction and it looked as if both the planes were standing still. But when I saw a plane moving in the opposite direction I saw how fast we were going too. We passed through many lands, I could see the snow cover peaks and later deserts. There was only sand for miles. There were no trees at all. It was all so fascinating.

We reached Abu Dhabi at 5 Pm local time. It would have been 2 o’clock in Germany. My luggage was booked directly to Mangalore. Abu Dhabi airport is very large, from the plane it took about ten minutes to the terminal. After immigration I walked to the gate where I was to go. After more than two months I saw so many people in one place. There are flights to different parts of the world from Abu Dhabi. My flight, Jet Airways to Mangalore was at 2.30, boarding began at 1.30. The Air Port Wi Fi connection and my book helped me to pass my time. Mangalore is to the east of Abu Dhabi and 1 ½ hours ahead. We were given something to eat in the flight and I was feeling hungry too. We reached Mangalore at 7.30 Indian time.

It was a long, sleepless journey and it was good to be back home. Mava (my father-in-law) and Keshava (my brother-in-law) had been in Manipal for a month. Mava had not been keeping well and had to be admitted in the hospital. He is 93 now. He is better now and wanted to go back home. He was waiting for me to return. He was happy to hear about Advaith and Kavya. On Saturday, 20th, we went to Maikuri (my father-in-law’s home in the village) he was happy to be back in his place.

We returned in the evening.
We are all fine. It took me two days to get over the jet lag. It is nice to be back. On the 22nd was my birthday. It is hard to believe I am 56 now but everything is fine. Doddamma, I called you but the phone connection was not at all good. That evening we went to Sri Mahishamardhini temple not far from home.

Seeking your blessings,
With lots of love,

Letter from Home-1 (Slice of Life)

  1. It was good to read about your flight home. The photograph of you (I think) shows that your trip has made you 2o years younger. Lovely to have travelled, but also lovely to be back home. San Cassimally
