“Birds like the koel
Learn early to make free use
Of homes built by crows.”

A Sanskrit Subhashita is a short verse which tells us a fact, a maxim, a truth, or words of wisdom.
काकः कृष्णः पिकः कृष्णः को भेद पिककाकयोः
वसन्तसमये प्राप्ते काकः काकः पिकः पिकः

[Kakah krishna pikah krishna, Ko bheda pika kaka yoho?
Vasanta samaye praptey, Kakah kakah pikah pikaha]

This Subhashita tells us, ‘A crow is black, the koel is black and we cannot tell the difference between them. But, when spring comes and the birds start singing we at once know which is a crow and which is a koel.

Letter from Home -19 (Slice of Life)

[My mother is with us now. She will be here till September. She was diagnosed Lymphoma in December. Fortunately she has responded well to Chemotherapy and her doctor is satisfied with the results. My mails are to my father’s elder brother’s wife. I call her doddamma which literally means elder mother. She is my favourite relative. From her I have learnt to take life as it comes. She is 87 now and due to her health condition she has not been able to go out from her home for many years. I started writing to her in October. Her son or daughter-in-law read it out to her and she enjoys the photos. The internet has really changed our lives. It has helped us to keep in contact with our friends and relatives.]

Dear Doddamma,
We are all fine here. Amma is fine. Tomorrow is the last day of the Yoga class. She has to continue at home. Dr Annapoorna is Head of the department. She has said that amma can come once a week later. Yesterday night we had very heavy rains with thunder and lightning.

rain, 27th and 28th (1)

There was wind too because today morning we saw branches of many trees in the campus lying n the ground. We were going to Yoga class. Today also it is very cloudy. Yesterday evening we went for a walk to EndPoint. Amma sat by the side of the football ground where there are seats. We went further to the park at the end and came back.

End point 27th (4)

On the 25th Kuvara went to Maikuri ( where his father and brother live) to attend the naming ceremony function of his cousin’s grand daughter. We call it ‘baarsa’ in Kannada. The baby is officially given her name on that day. This function was held in the hall of Perdala temple. Kuvara came back in the evening.

Destruction back

Doddamma, the land behind our house has been empty for a long time. It was bought by builders. On the 22nd we saw a JCB and lorries driving past our house. It is a sloping land and it is being levelled. Mud is being taken in the lorrys from morning to evening. Apartments are going to be built there. There will be a lot of noise for at least the next three years.

We and our neighbours bought mud from them to put in our garden. One truck-load costs Rs 1000. On Thursday the lorry driver came to unload the mud. Yesterday we could hire some workers to come and put the mud around all the plants. Fortunately we could get that done. With the rains it would have been difficult. According to the weather forecast the monsoon will start next week. Due to the heavy rains yesterday the lorries have not come to take the mud. The JCB is also not there. The land has become like a paste and lorries will get stuck in it. Maybe they will wait for the land to dry.

Today afternoon I went to Asare, the home for the mentally challenged. I go there thrice a week in the afternoon. There is one small boy there, he has autism. His parents live in Australia. They have left him here. He has a twin sister. His caretaker is a of Gayatri’s age. She has two children in primary school. She has studied only till 7th std. So she is determined that her children should get good education. Her husband says the children should go to a government school but she is sending them to an English medium private school. It is very sad but her husband is not supporting her. She is doing her best and I hope her dreams come true. Today evening it was raining so we did not go for a walk.

We are all fine here doddamma. Amma will talk to you tomorrow.
We talk to Gayatri, Advaith and Kavya everyday. Advaith is fine, he is having holidays now. He loves to collect shells and pebbles. He showed me his collection. Gayatri and Vinay read aloud stories to him everyday. He goes swimming and cycling with Vinay. Now there is sunlight till after eight in the night. When I was there in winter it was dark by 5’o clock. Evenings Gayatri takes Advaith and kavya to the park near his school. His friends come there. Kavya is now going forward on her stomach. She loves to play with Advaith and keeps watching him and laughing at his antics.

THE MONSOON SEASON WILL START SOON

In my part of the country we have only two seasons, summer and monsoon season. The month of may is very hot and by this time we all wait for the rains to start. We are having pre-monsoon rains now. People are happy because the water levels in many wells has increased. We are so dependent on the rains.

Dear Doddamma,
We tried to talk to you on Saturday, 19th but the connection was not good and twice it was broken. So amma wrote a letter to you and we posted it that evening.

19th to doddammaAmma is going to Yoga class since 14th. We had to attend a wedding on the 17th so she could not go to the class and that day while getting up she her back muscle got pulled and she had a little pain. I did not take her last week. But she was doing the pranayamas at home. I do the same so I could see whether she was doing correctly. Now she is better, we went today. We go and come by autorickshaw. There is an autorickshaw stand near home. They have a phone number. They come home when we call them. Aravind also goes to his college in an autorickshaw. It is very convenient for him. On the 18th we had to attend a Satyanarayana Puja. Amma did not come, I cooked lunch for her before going. Evening we went to the park near Venugopala temple in Manipal. It is very beautiful. The temple is one of our favourite places. Amma sat in one pf the benches and we went for a walk in the park.

Venugopala temple 19th (4)Last week we got many rains. Saturday night there was thunder and lightning too. Yesterday morning on our way to Maikuri there was rain till we reached Mangalore. Mava is fine though he does forget a lot. He cannot hear properly. But he does his work by himself, walks around and reads the newspaper regularly. We had taken mangoes from our tree and the couple who work there prepared rasayana. Mava likes it.

Maikuri 20th (5).jpgWe got back lots of wild mangoes. We gave to our neighbours. Today we decided to make mambala. Amma removed the pulp from the mangoes. We made rasam with what was left of the fruits. I put the pulp on a steel plate and kept it in water because of ants. Unfortunately, it was very cloudy today. So the mango did not dry properly. I will see how sunny it is tomorrow, if it is cloudy will add this pulp to the pineapple which we got from Maikuri and make jam.

Mambala

Our star apple tree still has many fruits but due to the rains they are rotting from inside. Kuvara plucked many and we gave the good one to some of our friends. We have been buying our groceries from the cooperative society from the beginning and we know the staff there. We gave some fruits to them too but told everyone to cut and eat. On the way back we went to the library to renew the books. I get books from there regularly. This library is the general library of Manipal Academy. It is for the staff of any of the colleges in Manipal.
Today evening one of our old friends came to invite us for son’s wedding. We were neighbours in the campus. It was nice catching up news about our children. I gave her some wild mangoes and told her how to make rasam.
It is now 9.45. Amma is reading a book and Aravinda is listening to some book in his computer. We are all fine here.
22nd – Doddamma, yesterday night we had thunder, lightning and rains. Two thunders sounded as if they were just above our heads. Today morning I added the mango pulp to the pineapple pieces and made jam. It would not have been possible to make mambala.
With love,
Lakshmi

POLITICS PULLS US INTO ITS WORLD

Elections to the legislative assembly has taken place, results have been declared. The two main parties have not got absolute majority. To form a government they have to form alliances with other smaller parties. Dirty politics is going on and even if we try to be indifferent we cannot. It is really a sad state of affairs.

cropped-maikuri-11th-18.jpg

Those disturbing thoughts

Elections to the legislative assembly of our state were held on the 12th of this month. For quite some time we have been hearing rival party leaders abusing each other and also making false promises to the people of our state. Politicians are a necessary evil. Maybe evil is too strong a word but most of them are disgusting people. They are only interested in the personal benefits of power and accumulating enough wealth to last many generations. It is as if there are no honest politicians. Reading the posts of many of my blogger friends I find that people have the same feeling towards politicians all over the world. It is an interesting phenomenon. But I believe there must be good politicians otherwise there would have been chaos across the length and breadth of our country. Next year we are going to have general elections to choose our representatives for Parliament and there will be a lot of drama taking place. When I reflect on this, disturbing thoughts come to mind. Why do we elect such people? According to some the individual candidate is not important, the party is. So we must vote for that party. What if the individual is unworthy of our vote? Are we at fault or is the system at fault?

Disturbing thoughts have the habit of unsettling our peace of mind. One Sunday, on our way back home we were crossing a bridge over a wide river. We had to stop as all other vehicles had come to a halt. Many people were looking over the parapet of the bridge. A young man had just committed suicide. His backpack was lying by the side of the road, a mute testimony to the tragedy. What desperate thoughts had driven him to take his own life? We generally believe that people who commit suicide are cowards, but they must be having a lot of courage to take this final step.

Disturbing thoughts have the habit of coming to mind at the most unexpected moments. Years ago I used to love reading tragedies and watching movies with tragic ends. But now I do not like them. As it is there are so many terrible things happening in real life. They leave their impact on us. But we get over them. Is it because they are not happening to us or near home? Such thoughts disturb us all the more. It is a moral dilemma; life is indeed very complicated.

“The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.” -John Milton
