Everyday Moments (#SOL 2019)

I believe that the moments in each day make our life what it is. Of course, the unexpected always happens and whatever preparations we make, Life surprises us. Many a time, we think that nothing happens in our life, but things do happen. I started writing to my Doddamma, my father’s elder brother’s wife in October 2017. She is 88 and is not able to hear properly. I post my letter to her every Tuesday. Both of us enjoy the letters. These letters have made it possible for me to appreciate the ordinary moments of life. I edit the letters and post them as Slice of Life every Tuesday.

On 8th evening we went to the temple square of our town. There are three ancient temples there. Pilgrims always come there from different parts of our country. We had not been there for a long time. It was just good to walk around. We saw many devotees standing near the temple chariot. In a little while, we saw them pulling the huge chariot and ahead of them women were singing and children in Yakshagana costume. It was nice to see this. People have their own beliefs and it is so personal.

On the 4th was the festival of Shivaratri. That evening went to the temple of Umamaheshwara ( Lord Shiva), not very far from our place. This festival is celebrated all over the country.

On the 5th morning my husband went to our village to be with his father and brother. He returned the next evening. That afternoon, I went to Asare, Home for the mentally challenged. I have been going there since 2011. I had written about my friend’s daughter who was selected for the special Olympics being held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from this 14th. There are 25 participants from India. They were in Delhi for a week’s coaching and have reached Abu Dhabi on the 8th. My friend’s daughter is very good swimmer and of national level. She has Downs syndrome.

I water the plants in our garden when my husband is away. We have planted many hibiscus plants. We have other trees too, but most of them were planted by the person from whom we got the land in 2002. Actually ten coconut trees were planted by his father in the seventies. We are eating the fruits of his labour 😊. Once in two weeks we gather all the dry leaves and burn them. After a few days we sprinkle the ashes near the plants and trees. I took a few photos of the rising smoke and the sun rays coming down. It looked beautiful.

I did not go for a walk one evening but sat in my neighbour’s verandah talking. My other neighbour joined us. We are all so busy with our lives so we have made it a point to meet once a week at least. One evening on our way for our evening walk, I saw an old friend of my parents. They were in Nigeria from 1979 to 1982. It was nice meet her unexpectedly.
On Sunday we went to our village to see my father-in-law. He is 94 now. He was a little confused yesterday. Something was troubling him and he was not able to tell us about. My husband’s cousin came to see him and he was happy to see her. We returned home in the evening. Life changes in so many ways as we grow older. Only the very lucky are mentally and physically fit till the end.
