Everyday Moments (#SOL- 2019)

(I believe that the moments in each day make our life what it is. Of course, the unexpected always happens and whatever preparations we make, Life surprises us. Many a time, we think that nothing happens in our life, but things do happen. I started writing to my Doddamma, my father’s elder brother’s wife in October 2017. She is 88 and is not able to hear properly. I post my letter to her every Tuesday. Both of us enjoy the letters. These letters have made it possible for me to appreciate the ordinary moments of life. I edit the letters and post them as Slice of Life every Tuesday.)

Last week was a one in which we lost two people, our neighbour and my father-in-law’s cousin’s wife. Both were in their eighties. On Monday morning we came to know that my husband’s aunt passed away. She was with her son in our village. My husband reached there in time for the cremation. All close family members were present. My husband returned next morning.
The killings in New Zealand, it is tragic. Why did he kill all those people? And he also took a video of him killing all those people! What is happening in this world? God only knows.
My friend’s daughter, a very good swimmer, is in AbuDhabi, taking part in the Special Olympics. She has won a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle. Everyone who knows her is very happy.

We see and hear a lot of birds but they do not come to eat the chapatis we put out for them. This happens every year. We don’t know why they do not come. But we do put out the chapati pieces and a lot of ants come to eat them 😊

We have three areca nut trees in our garden. The sheath of the areca leaf is very useful. They have always been used as plates. But, now it has become a very popular industry. Machines are used to give them the correct shape. My husband made some bowls from them. We have planted some flowering plants in them. In one bowl we keep water for the birds. The weather is becoming very hot now.

In our backyard we have a mango tree which was planted about twenty-five years by the people from whom we got this land. The tree never bore fruits. But this year there are some. We don’t what variety it is. We plucked some raw ones and I made pickles. We will pluck the others when they are ready to be plucked.

There are many cookery sites these days, earlier we used to use recipe books. I made bread and it came out well, much better than two other recipes which I had followed earlier. We had bought baby potatoes and I made Dum aloo. Instead of frying the potatoes I baked them. We liked the dish.😊

We are  going regularly for our evening walks, either to EndPoint or to the lake. I meet my mother’s walking friends in the park near the temple and in the training college grounds. I like talking to them. One friend says she keeps walking till she feels tired. The other friend counts the number of rounds she walks. She feels sad that she can walk only two rounds now, earlier she could walk four rounds. She is 84. I feel like telling her that she should not feel sad about it because she can at least walk that much. But I do not voice my thoughts.   I remember my doddamma who has not gone out for a long time. She just comes to the table to eat her food and sit there and read the newspaper. As we grow older there are so many changes and I think we have to be grateful for everything that we can do.

I listen to the lectures by a great Sanskrit scholar, Bannanje Govindacharya. It is said in the Vedas that we all behave according to our inherent nature. We keep learning but our inherent nature influences our actions in many ways.
