Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “animal sounds.” Write about the sounds animals make and how you experience them. Have fun!

‘Animal sounds’ remind me of our grandchildren. Not only our grandchildren but most children love to imitate the ‘bow wow’ of dogs and ‘meow’ of cats as soon as they learn to talk and to imitate. It is interesting and I wonder why they do that.

Of all the animal sounds the one which I don’t like is that of dogs howling. They raise their heads and start howling. I wonder why they do that. There must be a reason. Anyway that sound reminds of those long ago days when I enjoyed reading horror books, about werewolves and about Dracula. I think it was in 1977, I was in high school and I had completed Dracula that evening. It was a full moon night and moon light streamed into the room. I watched them with horror and I was sure that Dracula would come into the room on those rays. I woke up screaming with my mother rushing into the room 😊. So long ago, but I can still picture that scene.
Books are a very important and nice part of my life. But I make it a point not read anything disturbing just before going to bed 😊. Nightmares can spoil the night.

I am a person who believes there is not enough darkness in the world to extinguish the light of a small candle. We live in a small place in South India. I love reading, blogging, stitching, traveling, photography, listening to people and many other things which make life so very nice and interesting. Blogging is a fun experience, it has brought me into contact with people in different parts of the world and it is good to read about their everyday life. In spite of the differences there is a sameness which is fascinating. I have learnt and am learning something everyday. I have learnt to write haikus. I enjoy combining the thought and the number of syllables. I have always read books and I was happy to write short fiction. I had thought I would not be able to do so. Stream of Consciousness and photo challenges are fun too. Yes, there is so much in life that is sad and that hurts us. Many a time I wonder why life is so unfair to so many. We all have problems in life but the problems of many seems unbearable. This makes me feel so helpless. It is not possible to help everyone but we can do our bit, we can do something to help some in whatever way we can. Due to the pandemic I could not go to the Home for the mentally challenged for two years. I had been going there since 2011. I have started going again. I was happy that some members remembered me :) All of them are an important part of my life. There have been many challenges in life and we have faced them with a positive approach. Our grandson and granddaughter have made our lives richer.

  1. I think wolves howl to proclaim that they own their territory and to reinforce group identity. In many ways it’s a little like the human idea of everybody having a sing-song together.
In the film “Dracula” from 1931, the Count comments, when he hears the wolves howling: “Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make.” It’s quite a famous line from what is now a very old film.
