#SoCS October 1, 2021

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “inspire/aspire/expire.” Use them in any form you like. Use one, use two or use them all if you want. If you use two, you get bonus points! If you use all three, Cheryl will put your next drink on David’s tab. Enjoy!

We meet some people at different moments in life who inspire us. They need not be great people achieving great things. Everyday life is made up of everyday people facing what comes their way in life. From real life to the world of books. I love reading. I don’t  know how many books I have read over the years. Some characters in them live with me. They have been an inspiration. I aspire to be like them and wish to achieve what they have achieved before I expire😊.

Trustee from the Toolroom by Nevil Shute is one of my favourite books. The hero Keith Stewart has achieved in life what very few people are able to. I know this is a story but there are people like him in real life too. I love the last line of the book : ‘He has achieved the type of life that he desires; he wants no other. He is perfectly, supremely happy.’ It does not mean he is stagnating. He learns something new everyday and lives his dream.

I am going to be sixty in a few months and as I grow older, I look up to many senior friends and relatives who inspire me in different ways. Looking at them I think that if I were to live to their age, I should be like them, interested in life and learning till the last day.

This is the age of the internet and it is an important part of our lives. It has plus and minus points and how we deal with them is left to us. I am surprised when I hear people say they are not interested in learning about using the computer. They very proudly say that the social media plays no part in their lives. And I wonder 😊. Some relatives in the their seventies and eighties happily use WhatsApp and Facebook. It has helped them to be in contact with the younger generation. Others read and write, teach, crochet bags, embroider, listen to music and are so involved in doing what they love; there is not enough time in a day to live their dreams. They have such a positive attitude to life.

How we face life depends on us. There is so much in our hands but circumstances arise over which we have little control. We have to do our best and leave the rest to God or to whatever we believe in.

What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.  “My favorite day,” said Pooh.” ― A.A. Milne

  2. Well done. You scored the bonus points and the free drink, but more than that, you have made a most important observation. I love learning new things, and I try to learn something every day. I passed 60 several years ago, but it’s not a barrier to learning. Enjoy the day and everything that waits for you beyond that day.

  3. It’s great that people of all ages can inspire us! And interesting how different things inspire different people! I suppose if we were all the same, life would be sooo boring! 😀

One has to give time to oneself to get intimate knowledge of oneself which paves the way of accepting one’s both good and bad. This paves the way for learning to be better than what one is at present. Life gives us plenty of learning opportunities.

  7. I didn’t know that his full name was “Nevil Shute Norway” and that his autobiography is called “Slide Rule: The Autobiography of an Engineer”. I was surprised to see that he studied engineering at Oxford and continued as an engineer while he wrote novels.

  10. I must say that my 70’s are so far proving the most contented in my life. I am reading, writing and connecting with people all over the world. Never a dull moment, even in the midst of a pandemic.
