Last week was a rainy week. And today evening it just poured for more than an hour, with thunder and lightning. We do not know whether they are pre-monsoon rains or rains due to a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. I always wonder how cyclones in the east coast bring rain in the west coast. The weather had been very hot and humid and we welcomed the rain.

On the 8th we attended a thread ceremony function of my husband’s cousin’s grandson. It was nice meeting our relatives after a long time. There, I bit a piece of jalebi and felt a sharp pain in an upper tooth. I knew something had gone wrong. I am having root canal treatment for two teeth and had been very careful while biting anything. On the 12th I had an appointment and my doctor said one tooth was fractured and it had to be removed. I got an appointment for the next day. Why is it that a visit to the dentist fills one with apprehension? My husband is a dentist😊. Ours is a teaching hospital and he has worked here from 1981 to 2017. My doctor was very good and he had the tooth out in five minutes. And that was something to smile about 😊. A third year under- graduate student was assigned to watch him at work. He was telling her the whole process patiently and in detail. I too learnt something that day. The student was very good too. She was answering all his questions. I was happy to see a teacher willing to teach and a student happy to learn. I have to go again after a week to get the suture removed.
We had started our book club in 2009 and we met every month but now we have not met for more than two years. Some of us were talking that we needed newer and younger members. Some of them also said that they are not reading much now. I too have lost interest in book club. One of our members has retired and is returning to Chennai, her home city. She and her husband are doctors. Their elder son and Aravind were classmates from kindergarten. My husband and her husband were hostel mates 😊. We had a farewell party for her. All of us got something to eat and we had a good time together.

Saturday evening we went to Endpoint for our evening walk and yesterday near our home. Writing about walks, I have started doing walking exercises early morning, four days a week. It is fun and I am enjoying myself. I came to know about it from Kim’s post. Thank you Kim 😊.

I checked in YouTube and am liking this by Lucy Wyndham.

I am reading a fascinating book by Anirudh Kannisetti, Lords of the Deccan. And I am also listening to The Secret Garden in Librivox😊.

Thanks Lakshmi ( I hope I got your name right) for including WDYS in your reflections. It’s always good to see people willing to teach/ share their knowledge and those willing to learn. Thanks

With the pandemic, there has been a shortage of dentists. My wife’s dentures broke 4 or 5 months ago, and she cannot find a dentist on the NHS. In the end she had to accept going private, and even then there is a wait of 4 weeks. Tour husband would make a bomb over here!

When Gayatri and children were here, she went for a dental checkup. In Germany , it is very expensive.

It is good that it only took 5 minutes, but still, ouch! Glad you were able to get it taken care of so quickly. A teaching hospital sounds great thing.

Aww, thank you for the shout out and I’m glad I inspired you to walk more!
We have a book club at church that I find very interesting, but I also go for the fellowship. ☺️ We are reading Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown, it’s very good! It’s all about how language affects our relationships, and all the books we read are faith-based, so I call it a faith book club. I also enjoy fiction, maybe you would too…I can suggest many books I have read and enjoyed!

So much packed into one post, Lakshmi!
1. I’d love to know more about the thread ceremony.
2. I’ve had just about every dental procedure under the sun and yet still get anxious.
3. I still love book club, but have had a hard time reading. I recently made myself a goal to read for just 10 minutes. It’s been great.

Thank you. The thread ceremony is called Upanayana in most Indian languages. I love reading books,🙂 but the book club meetings were becoming boring.

It is true that going to the dentist causes anxiety. Don’t know why. I have had root canals, caps, and extractions and still dread going to the dentist. I have never belonged to a book club. Don’t know if I could keep up with the reading or if I would like reading books I didn’t pick out myself.

We did not read one book but talked about the books we had read in that month. If a book does not hold my interest in the first chapter, I stop reading it ☺️. Why waste time when there are so many books to read.

Well, I don’t know what a Gulmohur tree is, but it’s certainly very beautiful.

The flowers are also called May flowers. The trees bloom in April and May only.

What a week!
We have had a particularly rainy Spring in Vancouver – blustery and cool. I wonder how our rain, a temperate rainforest, compares to yours?
Ouch – your poor teeth. I am glad you were able to get quick help. I love how you wrote all the small details including the mentorship of the student.
I really enjoy your writing style. Thanks for sharing.
