Screams of those they robbed
Meant nothing to them at all.
To feather their nest,
Was all that they believed in.
What did they care of others?

  1. Good use of metaphor here to use birds to point to a larger injustice.

What a powerful piece. I’ve been looking for some short poetry that is written in past tense that can be put in present tense … it is an activity I use to show students the power of different tenses and of course to practice verb tense and tense agreement. This is a great mentor piece for that.
