I have known Ramesh for many years. He is a special educator. A few years ago, he and some of his friends got together and started an organization. Such organisations are called ‘Trusts’. Ramesh and his team named their Trust, Adithya Trust. They are working at the grass root level to help very poor people and those with disabilities too. They make it a point to visit the people concerned in their houses, talk to them and encourage them. People are happy to see someone taking interest and doing something for them.
Many years ago, my parents had formed a Trust to help educate children from the low-income group. My father’s father could not continue his studies after primary school as there was no high school in his village. This was in early 20th century. But chance happenings in life made it possible for him study further. He believed learning and education were very important and helped to educate many children. That changed their lives forever.
My father was working in Indian Railways and was in a high post when he retired. He passed away in 2016. My mother gets pension and she likes to help people financially. She has donated to Adithya Trust. A few months ago, Aravind thought it would good if children studying in government schools were to get books to read. Their parents are poor and earn just enough to make ends meet. They would have no money to buy books. We talked to Ramesh about this, he thought it was wonderful idea. Aravind and my mother donated money to buy books and for a cupboard to keep them. The books have been purchased and are being circulated among children in different schools.
Ramesh sends me messages and photographs of all that is happening. He said when he first went to a school and asked the children if they liked story books, they all said yes with a big smile. He said it was so satisfying to see the smiles on the faces of the children when they held the books in their hands. We too were happy. Books are friends for life.
